How to Install a Board-and-Batten-Inspired Accent Wall (Step-by-Step Guide)
If you’re looking for a high-impact DIY that instantly elevates any wall, a board-and-batten-inspired wall is one of the best projects you can tackle in a weekend. This project adds architectural detail, depth, and a custom feel—without a full renovation. Shop the room here: You can find the materials I used on my Lowe’s storefront, and the bedding here. 1. Plan & Measure Your Layout
Before installing anything, decide where you want your placement. Make sure to factor in clearance around outlets. I chose to do the entire wall, starting with 1×3 boards across the ceiling and bottom. I laid the bottom 1×3 directly on top of my existing baseboard. However, if you have thinner baseboards, a great trick is to install a piece of cove moulding (flipped upside down) or base cap moulding on top of your baseboard first. This builds out a wider ledge so your 1×3 board sits flat and flush without any awkward overhang!

2. Cut your 1×3 and attach the boards
Cut your horizontal and vertical boards. Use a stud finder to locate studs along the wall and mark them. This ensures your boards are securely attached.
Then use a level to draw straight vertical lines where your battens will go.
Mark the studs and start by installing your horizontal boards. I placed mine at the ceiling and on top of the baseboard.
Next, install your vertical boards. Start on the sides of the wall and make your way to the middle. Attach them to the wall with a brad nailer. Make sure each board is level before securing.

3. Cut and install the basecap
It might be tempting to measure once and cut all your base cap pieces at the same time as the 1×3 boards, but walls are rarely straight! To get a perfect fit, measure the exact space between each of your vertical boards right before you cut.
Here’s a trick to save time at the saw: Make all your left-side 45-degree cuts first, then swing your saw blade once to make all your right-side 45-degree cuts. Changing your saw angle only once keeps things fast and easy! (If you want to go super fast, you can also set up a 45-degree jig on your miter saw like I did on my staircase.)
- Cut all your trim ends at 45° so the corners fit tightly together.
- Nail them in place using a brad nailer.
This step is super quick, and it’s the moment your feature wall really starts to look finished!

4: Fill and Caulk
Now it’s time to make everything look seamless.
- Punch in stuck nails: Sometimes a nail hits a wall stud and doesn’t go all the way in. If that happens, gently tap a nail punch with a hammer to sink the nail head just below the wood surface.
- Fill all nail holes: Spread a tiny dab of wood filler over every nail hole so it sits flat with the board.
- Caulk the seams: Run a smooth bead of paintable caulk along all the edges where the boards meet the wall and ceiling to hide any small gaps.
- Let it dry: Give the filler and caulk time to dry completely before you start painting!
This step is what gives you that professional finish.

5: Paint
I used Sherwin-Williams Modern Gray, and it took a few coats for full coverage.
- Tape off at the ceiling and the baseboards if needed
- Apply multiple coats for a smooth finish
- Let dry between coats

This project completely changed the look of my back bedroom wall. The added texture and dimension make the space feel custom and elevated—without a huge cost.
And the best part? You can customize it to your space, whether you go full height or keep it partial like I did.
